Cloud Ash from Iceland...who should be responsible???

Hi guys,

I just came back from Hamburg last Sunday for a business trip. Based on the normal schedule, I should take the plane from Geneva to Hamburg on Friday morning and be back from Hamburg to Zurich on Sunday afternoon. But then all things changed due to the volcanic eruption in Iceland. I went to Basel on Thursday night, hope to be able to catch the early morning train to Hamburg (hope to arrive in the early afternoon)on Friday. Luckily I had my seat reserved (I've paid CHF 10,- more expensive just to have place reserved for me), otherwise I had to move around (tried to find an empty seat if I am lucky enough) during the 6.30 hours trip. On my way back from Hamburg, again I am lucky enough to have my seat reserved (for Hamburg - Basel part), otherwise I can't imagine how my 10-hour trip would last :(

So the point is that, just because of the activity from a volcano that I never even heard the name mentioned in my geography class, neither that I know that it's existed, we had to change the whole meaning of travelling in Europe. I could tell you, it's a chaos on the train that I took on Friday (work day), I saw some young executives (in their full suits), sitting in front of the toilet of ICE's 1st class wagon working on their laptop. I heard from other people that I met on my business trip that the car rental around Frankfurt was ran out of cars - bet Avis and Hertz have some good timing for business.

And today,I heard on CNN, the spokeman from IATA talked about how US government gave some $15 billion for relief for US airliners during the 9/11, so they think the EU government supposed to do the same too.

Easy said than to be done, I assess this matter differently, for 9/11, at least those $15 billion were given to US airliners since the tragedy that halt all the air traffic happened on their country. Now for this Cloud of Ash, who should pay for who? I mean, look at this, some nations in Europe doesn't even have it's own national carrier, just say the place where I am leaving, the Swiss International is not Swiss' national carrier, it's own by Lufthansa which is German's company. So, is that mean Swiss government should give some relief to German's company? How about Alitalia and KLM which are own by Air France, does French government should take out their pocket money for those two airlines who were based at the other countries? And how about foreign airliners that got stranded here? Could they get some of those money too??

Other scenario will be, let's do the collective payment and share the money equally, by how?????

But one positive things for Swiss, they talked about European government should give the compentation, but Swiss isn't European countries...we are not schengen baby!!!!

Honestly, even though the government didn't close the air space, I bet any airlines were dare enough to try to fly in such uncertainty condition. For me, I found out, sometimes airlines companies would like to use this chance to get some extra cash from government by saying "I told you not to do so...it's your fault!"

I could be totally wrong, but at least, I had my opinion.
